The humanitarian business
Translated into English by: H.B.M
Whenever there is a crisis, media flock to show the human suffering, anxieties and fears. This crazy race to scoops, figures and shocking news is not only lifting up the channels' and radios'bank accounts, but also has impact on an emerging Business "The Humanitarian Business".

This business is a chain involving humanitarian actors at international level and various economic, political and social components in hosting community.
Actually, throughout my personal experience in Tunisia,I found there is a huge gap between vulnerables' expectations, what is really provided to them and the perception of the local community.

Some international organisations are very complex machines where money seep slowly and deeply to let a few drops fall upon beneficiaries (mainly the refugees). Luxurious hotels, 4 * 4 cars and huge salaries for ... Tents thrown without any order or monitoring, refugees left to their fate, alone and without support, and more importantly, a Machiavellian use of local resources and economic potential of the hosting country. The local economy is thereby severely affected: local workers leave their workplaces to worthless jobs with 3 or 4 times higher incomes. These jobs harm the local economy at mid and long term by increasing the demand without positive return on investement and creating a kind of parallel society with high-standard living conditions (house renting prices rising rapidly, commodities' prices increasing rapidly).

The enormous financial potential of those organizations triggers a mutual interest with the local host. The former have always hidden political and economic agendas and enough resources and potential to overcome the local community. Refugees get to the bottom of the priority list and the humanitarian imperative as promoted to the media become a beautiful illusion.
As young activists we must lobby against those scroungers selling victims' pictures to line their pockets. We need to increase awareness among decision-makers to come up with local strategies and plans focusing on vulnerables and preventing collateral damages.

Leadership training session in Tunisia

The campaign "Youth on the move" started a new slogan: Doing More, Doing Better, Reaching Further. So we need not only more work to achieve the MDGs but also a better quality of community service and we need to come closer to vulnerables.
That's why, the Tunisian Red Crescent had started a new training process called "Young Leaders for positive change". It's not just a training about leadership but also a life experience lasting about a year during what participants can practice and improve their skills and learn by doing community work. They would learn how to make sustainable work with less funds but better visibility.
The October session had started the 10th of October 2010 and will last 4 other weeks before getting to field work for a year. twenty four young volunteers selected from the most vulnerable regions are in this process. The first impression seems to be good as you can see in the facebook page of the project (Jeunes Leaders pour le Changement Positif).

YFC and TIG: An experience of life

YFC2 was more than a competition in which you can win a grant, it 's a dynamic process starting with creation and willingness leading to an exchange of visions and experiences.
It's an experience of a life were you can face a lot of challenges and learn how to go through and grow strong.
Watching how hard the young volunteers are working to change their communities and help to make a better world, gave me a great energy and power and made me more committed to my volunteer work.
Youth For Change made me learn how to be a good leader by doing it and experiencing it in real life.
Youth For Change is giving me the opportunity to change the reality and to build a better world around me.
So Thank You YFC! Thank You TIG! and Thank you BA.

Celebration of the world peace day

The Tunisian Red Crescent (Regional committee of Bizerta) took a part in the celebration of the world peace day 2010 under the title "Youth and the culture of peace".
An important event was organized on Sunday, September the 26th, in Bizerta by the United Nations Youth Assembly of Tunisia in partnership with ministry of youth and the Tunisian Red Crescent.
The celebration started in the morning with workshops made by Youth House volunteer, Tunisian scouts and the TRC volunteers. So we facilitated a YABC session about the culture of peace and we made a presentation about YABC to about 30 youth and some high political representatives like the general secretary of the national union of youth organization, the vice-president of the national parliament for youth, and heads of the regional authorities.
After the lunch, all participants made a street march to the cultural center of the town where they assisted to a theatre performance and a musical concert about the culture of peace.
TV7 and 21 Channel were covering the event.
The celebration was so successful that the national authorities decided to celebrate it every year in Bizerta as a message of peace from Tunisia on Behalf of Africa to the entire world.
Let's pledge for an eternal peace in this world.

TIG au congrés mondial de la jeunesse

About this event: 5th World Youth Congress - Turkey 2010

Merci TIG!!
